Strategy for education and research

Medical education for the training of future physicians is a prime mission of Faculty of Medicine. However, our goal in the Department of Pharmacology is not just to train doctors, but also to train to become world class leaders who can contribute to the development of tomorrow's medicine and healthcare with responsibility and pride. To this end, we are committed to extend our activities globally with a diversified field of education and research. We have a large number of foreign students, fellows and researchers in our department, and share a multicultural environment. Aiming to make an opportunity of global exposure for our students, we are leading an international exchange activities with the University of California in the United States and Thammasat University in Thailand.

Basically, we are conducting pharmacology lectures and practical training for the undergraduate students in the Faculty of Medicine. We also provide the early exposure of basic research (experimental learning) with cells and animals to the students who have a keen interest in basic science. In addition, we delivered lectures on pharmacology focusing on kidney and hypertension in other universities (Yokohama City University, Fujita College of Medicine, Nara Medical University, Osaka University, Okayama University, Hiroshima University, Tottori University, Shimane University, Ehime University, Tokushima University, Kochi University, Kurume University, etc.) in Japan. Some of the lectures for medical students/undergraduate levels are conducted in English.

Moreover, we conduct a number of lectures and practical session for the graduate students. Research training are provided to the students under the close supervision of senior researchers and faculties. Doctoral and postdoctoral education are basically conducted in English. We have weekly and monthly research meetings, where every members present their research results and ideas in English. Since graduate students from other departments also participate, the research themes cover a wide range of fields. Up to now, all of our students have published their research results in international and peer reviewed journals, graduated in times (within 4 years) with almost no carry over, and are active in professional fields.

Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows focus on developing the ability to assemble research by themselves, using the research techniques available in graduate school. We always respect research ideas and opinions from students. We train the students to think about how they proceed to prove their idea and how the findings can lead to the development of new therapeutics. In addition, we also educate the graduate students, especially how to prepare an application for a research grant and how to manage a laboratory. Above all, the motto of our department is free, open discussion in a vast field of research. Our multinational members continue to conduct global joint research, and we are making efforts to link it to educational activities.
