Notation of microsatellite loci

The name of a microsatellite locus consists of the following information.

  1. Species name: hs for human, pt for chimpanzee and pp for orangutan
  2. Chromosome
  3. Repeat unit group and the number of repeats
Repeat unit group includes the repeat units with complimentary nucleotides and the repeat motifs with different starting positions. For example, repeat unit gropp A includes A and T, and AG includes AG, TC, GA, and CT.
  4. The order of the locus within the same repeat unit group from the tip of the short arm of the chromosome.

For example, the following locus is a human dinucleotide repeat locus of repeat unit group AC with three repeats that appeared first within the repeat unit group on the orthologous region of human and chimpanzee chromosome 21. The starting nucleotide position of the locus is 13842146.

hs-C21-AC(3)-1-(13842146)

The name for a human locus is followed by the location of the locus: intergenic, intronic, cds (overlapping with a protein coding region), cdswtin (within a protein coding region), or exonic (overlapping with exonic region or overlapping with exonic region excluding cds and cdswtin).

The orthologous loci are shown in the same line.
