Philosophy and Policies Division of Medicine

Philosophy of Education

The Division of Medicine aims at nurturing researchers who are self-reliant in the medical arena, having a broad international perspective, with high research expertise and wealth of basic knowledge required to carry out ingenious research activities, while at the same time having a deep insight in research and life ethics, thereby contributing to advances in medicine and improvement of social well-being.

Division of Medicine Three Policies

Diploma Policy
We, based on the Philosophy of Education, cultivate high-level professionals who are capable of contributing to the advancement of medicine, having advanced and extensive specialized knowledge and skills in medicine and life sciences, an ability to properly analyze and utilize information concerning the arena of academic research, and high research and life ethical values based on a rich sense of humanity. The attainment criteria of ability and attitude to be acquired by doctoral degree (medicine) holders produced by the university following completion of this course are as follows:
1. Specialized Knowledge/Understanding
- To have high-level extensive specialized knowledge and skills in medicine and life sciences, as well as perception and an adept understanding grounded in such expertise.

2. Research/Application Abilities
- To have the ability to plan and implement research by collecting technical information, and to present the research results by logical judgement and analysis predicated on knowledge and experience.
- To be able to work for the advancement of medicine and life sciences by adapting their own specialized knowledge and scientific thinking.

3. Ethical Values/Social Responsibility
- To be capable of playing an active role as high-level professionals while recognizing their social responsibility, through the cultivation of high research and life ethical values based on a rich sense of humanity, as well as research that contributes to the development of medicine and life sciences.

4. Global Perspective
To have the ability to lead society with an international awareness and expertise, and to work diligently based on a high aspiration to contribute to the development of medicine and life sciences from a global perspective.

Curriculum Policy
In order to cultivate human resources as described under the Diploma Policy, the curriculum of the Division of Medicine (Doctoral Course) has one major (Medicine) with two courses (Training Course for Researchers in Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine and Life Sciences, and Training Course for Advanced Clinicians), which consist of the Common Course (6 credits), Specialized Course (16 credits or more), and Dissertation Research Project (8 credits or more). The completion requirements are; to obtain the above 30 or more credits, and following receiving the necessary research guidance, to pass the doctoral dissertation review and the final examination. The course subjects (common and specialized) are taught based on varied teaching formats specified by the respective syllabus, while dissertation research projects are based on day-to-day guidance by the chief and sub-research supervisors.

Each item under the Diploma Policy will be attained through the following systematic education.
1. Specialized Knowledge/Understanding
In the Common Course provided during the first academic year, students learn to understand and acquire specialized knowledge concerning medicine and life sciences. In the Specialized Course during the period from the first to third year; groups of subjects on life sciences, clinician/medical staff training, and cancer specialist training, they further acquire the broader specialized knowledge required to play an active role as professionals.

The Training Course for Researchers in Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine and Life Sciences cultivates human resources capable of basic research based on a high-level research ability and knowledge required to independently carry out ingenious medical research. While the Training Course for Advanced Clinicians cultivates research-oriented medical professionals and specialists in areas including cancer care, based on regionally specific diseases and the latest medical knowledge.

2. Research/Application Abilities
In the Dissertation Research Project provided during the third and fourth years, students acquire a tirelessly inquiring mind, and thinking and judging abilities in the process of setting and formulating a research topic and working hypothesis for its solution. Following verification of such research, as well as analysis and consideration of the results of analysis to draw a certain conclusion, students further develop abilities for research, special application and expression through preparation of a doctoral dissertation in English.

3. Ethical Values/Social Responsibility
Medical research requires the cultivation of high-level life and medical ethics, as well as human resources who are able to contribute to the improvement of social well-being through medical research, thereby fulfilling a social responsibility. In order to satisfy both of these requirements at a high level of achievement, Research and Life Ethics is established as a first year compulsory common subject, providing ethical education and teaching deep insight concerning life ethics, thereby fostering resources capable of contributing to society.

4. Global Perspective
It is required as a general rule that doctoral theses are to be presented in English. All provided course subjects are therefore designed to also improve students’ ability to read literatures in English to help them obtain knowledge of the latest medicine and life sciences. Students develop the ability and skills to express and communicate in order to lead society by acquiring an international awareness and pursuing ingenious research activities from a global perspective.

The learning outcome of the above is assessed based on a rigorous evaluation method employing the five grade point average (GPA). In the case of course subjects, it is evaluated basically on the level of students’ comprehension concerning their acquired knowledge and ability to explain, while in the case of research projects, it is evaluated on an overall rating of their abilities to plan and implement research by applying knowledge and special skills.

The doctoral dissertation is evaluated for its acceptance by examiners selected by the School of Medicine who specialize in the subject areas (one chief examiner and two sub-examiners) together with one designated researcher who specializes in the subject areas (other than the foregoing chief and sub-examiners), in accordance with the rigorous dissertation examination criteria stipulated by the School of Medicine, following the dissertation review and the final examination. To ensure a rigorous and fair examination, the research supervisors cannot act as examiners, while the examination is held in the style of an open discussion.
